There aren’t a lot of superstars from Anderson, Indiana; but R&B ingénue Mylah is making strides to put her tiny hometown on the map. The vocalist and songwriter won “Top Female Vocalist” at the Indiana Black Expo and since then, she’s been on a whirlwind ride with an eye toward stardom.
“I was bitten by the bug,” she recalls. “It was different compared to family saying ‘Yeah, you’re great’ as opposed to all of these random people. It was a different type of energy. I fell in love from there.”
After a failed stint with a girl group, the sassy starlet pushed forward. She moved to Atlanta and began carving a name for herself. Before long, she got the attention of one of the industry’s most respected hitmakers, Bryan-Michael Cox. The multiple-Grammy winning producer and songwriter has worked with a who’s who of contemporary R&B; and now he’s at the helm of Mylah’s debut project.
“It’s [being] executive-produced by Bryan-Michael Cox…and the sound is sexy with a touch of grittiness — like myself!” she says with a laugh. “It’s going to be really fun, sexy music. Like a mix between Janet Jackson and Mary J. Blige. Just good music.”
Her single, “Honesty,” has been buzzing online since the late spring, and she says that her songwriting has blossomed. “I think my style is unique because it’s very relatable,” Mylah explains. “Everybody loves a good party song, but the reality is everybody isn’t in the club poppin’ bottles every single night. My [music is about] how people feel in relationships or living their life.
“I take a lot of subject matter from actual conversations with my friends,” she adds. “It’s fun to take a piece of how someone feels and embellish that. And then have someone who’s not a part of that conversation come back later and say ‘That [applies] to what I’m going through and ‘I really felt that.’ That’s how I feel about ‘Honesty.’ ”
