In a show of solidarity for Trayvon Martin, thousands of Twitter and Instagram users have decided to “black out” their profile photo until the verdict is read.
On July 11, Twitter and Instagram messages that detailed the reason for the “black out” spread instantaneously. The social media campaign has been supported by celebrities such as Toya Wright, Karrueche, Lil Mama and others.
By midnight, nearly 500,000 Instagram posts contained the hashtags #BlackOut or #JusticeForTrayvonMartin. A similar social media campaign spawned after the death of Martin in 2012. Individuals posted pictures of themselves wearing hoodies or holding Skittles candy and Arizona Ice Tea.
