How did the song “Halle Berry” catapult you to fame?
“Halle Berry” was a hit song for me. I was in college when that song came out and I can remember walking to class and finding out that I was No. 1 one on “106 & Park.” The song did a lot for me because I got to see the world and perform in places such as Korea and London but I was so young. I was thrown into the life of fast cars and girls overnight. After I was signed to the hip-hop production duo Play-N- Skills, I started producing and writing songs for artists like 50 cent, Ludacris and Nelly. I think that it was a great opportunity at the time, but it taught me that I didn’t know the business well enough to secure my contract and limit the label’s control. Eventually, we decided to go our separate ways but I learned a lot from the experience.
What can we expect on the new project?
There’s a part of me that’s serious and there’s a part of me that would like to expound on the things that I write about. On this album you will hear a lot of the same flash from “Halle Berry” but this time I will get to do that on a larger level by showing the people who I really am as a person. It’s been four years since that song and my new single “Well, Well, Well” and the new album is going to reflect all of that. You are going to hear it in my voice you are going to hear it in my lyrics. “Halle Berry” was a great song but I don’t want it to pigeonhole and typecast [myself] as a club artist.
Where do you hope to go from here?
I’m going to continue on God’s plan. The stories that I have are like a movie, just by telling people what has happened to me within these last three or four years from “Halle Berry” up until today, it just feels like a movie without a title. If this is what the Lord has planned for me, I am going to allow the good and the bad lessons that come along with it because this is what I love to do.
