When I posted on Facebook about being stunned by a redshirt phenom who together one of the best freshman quarterback debuts I had ever seen, I didn’t realize that there was anyone else watching the Monday night collegiate football game between Florida State and Pittsburgh. I see now that I was wrong.
If you don’t know Jameis Winston (first name pronounced JAME-ISS), you soon will, much like we were introduced to last year’s freshman sensation Johnny Manziel. The redshirt freshman QB for the Florida State Seminoles eviscerated the Pitt Panther defense with surgical precision, going 25-for-27, 356 yards and 5 touchdowns, including one rushing score in a 41-13 thrashing in Pennsylvania.
“I saw more from “Famous” Jameis in one half of football than I ever saw from (former FSU quarterback) E.J. Manuel on the football field. That’s a strong statement,” said ESPN’s Skip Bayless of “First Take.”
Moreover, I was not the only one who was convinced of this young man’s potential for superstardom after going 17-of-18 and 240 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, which made this next statement from former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN “College Game Day” analyst Kirk Herbstriet:
