DJ Drama, Don Cannon, Trendsetter Sense, DJ Era and The Academy hosted a community service event called, ‘The Academy Salutes Young Men of Influence’ to highlight the spirit and history of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech. The Academy DJs hailing from California, Ohio, Philadelphia, Texas and other areas across the country honored twenty-five exemplary eighth grade male students of Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Atlanta, GA on Tuesday September 10, 2013.
The Academy Salutes Young Men of Influence ceremony recognized King Middle School students who were hand-selected by their teachers, counselors and coaches as leaders and positive influences on their communities and school. DJ Drama, Don Cannon, Trendsetter Sense and DJ Era spoke to the students about positive influences, leadership, manhood and teamwork. “Excuses keep you from prioritizing the things you need to work on in order to be successful and accomplish your dreams,” said Don Cannon. “Learn from mistakes, don’t be lazy, I wasted too much energy on distractions.” One of the youngest DJs of The Academy DJ Era followed up with the importance of a team, which is the backbone of the DJ clique. “It is never to early to start building a team to reach your goals and utilize your resources even within your group of friends now at school,” said DJ Era.
The Academy awarded each student with a certificate and VIP gift bag sponsored by Cassius of Roller Coaster Waves. Following the ceremony students also enjoyed a catered lunch provided by Nancy’s Pizza. The majorities of King Middle School students come from low-income families and travel by bus from nearby inner city neighborhoods. The school strives to provide students with a peaceful, productive and orderly learning environment but is unable to control outside distractions prone to minority young men. The Academy partnered with King Middle School to encourage and empower the kids to be positive influences in the community.
