Hairstylist Eddie Alexander likes to educate clients

How did you arrive at this career choice? Was it a deliberate decision or a gradual and natural evolution?
It was a deliberate decision. Originally, I was going to be a barber, but I felt it would limit my opportunities. So I figured I’d do cosmetology and get the best of both worlds.

What separates you from others in your field? What is unique to the experience that you create?
One thing I believe sets me aside from a lot of others is I like to help educate my clients on how true hair care works. That way they’re able to make better decisions for their hair.

For those considering entering this arena, what skill sets do you recommend mastering? What traits are most conducive to success?
Customer service, drive and networking — you have to really want it to make it big in this industry.

How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?
Constant education and pushing [my] personal comfort zone limits. Stay outside the box.

How do you map out your goals? How do you measure your success?
Success is not a destination; it’s a journey. Your success is determined by whether or not you decide to take that journey, and what you learn while you’re on it that can change the lives of others.

Name three books, works, performances or exhibits that changed how you view life, yourself or both.
The Bible, The Secret and spoken word poetry

What affirmations do you repeat to yourself that contribute to your success?
Mainly Scriptures that apply to whatever life throws at me.
