A Chinese couple in Shanghai really wanted a new iPhone. The couple allegedly put their baby up for sale with a price range of $4,900 to $8,200.
The couple already has two older children to care for and decided it would be best to find another family who would be able to provide a better upbringing for their little girl. They allegedly put their daughter up for adoption through online postings and actually accepted money for the baby.
They spoke with Shanghai officials defending their innocence and simply wanting a better life for the baby. The local paper, Jiefang Daily, named the couple only as “Mr. Teng and Ms. Zhang” and quoted them saying, “We did not send the baby off for a profit, but to give the child a better life of security,” the couple said, according to the newspaper.
It is unclear as to how much they received for the baby, however, after the alleged “trade,” the couple reportedly went on an online shopping spree, purchasing an iPhone and high-end athletic shoes, among other items.
While here in the U.S., it’s common to see many people walking around with Apple products, in China they are a sign of status. Owning an iPhone or an iPad represents prestige and class regardless of how much money they actually have in the bank.
