Being Tika Sumpter: ‘I’m going to make them remember me …’

Sumpter has been enjoying her journey while maintaining her focus. If you want ”woe-is-me” tales of hardship, look elsewhere. It’s not because the personable actress hasn’t had to face her trials — it’s because she has faced them, grown from them and won’t allow negativity to define her. Who has time to be negative when you love what you do with such enthusiasm? She was once again reminded of how much she loves what she does while on the set for the upcoming James Brown biopic Get On Up.

“In between takes, the band started playing and all of the actors onset started dancing,” she recalls. “And it just felt like a spiritual, fun experience. It really was like back in the day and we were all dressed in ‘60s [clothes.] I live for amazing collaborative times on set like that. And also, I get a kick out of my family enjoying and seeing the fruits of my labor. Taking my mom with me and letting her see this life, when she didn’t even understand what I was doing when I was 18 years old. Those are the two things I really enjoy and why I wake up in the morning.

“I can’t stop thinking about acting. What’s the next project? Who do I get to become?”
