Teacher may face criminal charges for locking kindergartner

Kindergarten teacher Kristin Oshfeldt could face criminal charges for punishing her student by locking her in a closet. According to WREG in Memphis, Tenn., Oshfeldt locked Akeelah Joseph, 5, in a closet because the student was “playing too much.”

Oshfeldt eventually left the school because she was sick. However, she never unlocked the closet to release Joseph. After being locked in the closet for more than an hour, a substitute teacher finally heard the young girl and unlocked the closet’s door.

Apparently, this wasn’t the first time Oshfeldt used this form of isolation on students. Two years ago, she was reprimanded for locking another student in the closet.

But this time, things could be more serious. The police are investigating the incident and Memphis’ Department of Child Services will also look into the matter.

Oshfeldt has been suspended by the school as the investigation continues.
