A mother of five died after undergoing a butt-lift surgery in Miami. According to the Miami Herald, a recently released autopsy revealed Maribel Cardona, 51, died from the surgery performed at Vanity Cosmetic Center in July.

Cardona drove from Naples, Fla., to have the procedure because Vanity Cosmetic Center was inexpensive compared to other surgical centers.

However, Cardona reconsidered after family members gave her warnings about the risk of the surgery. She asked for a refund, but the surgeon, Anthony Hasan, would not return her $4,000 deposit.

Cardona decided to go along with the surgery because she couldn’t get her money back. Minutes after the procedure, Cardona began having trouble breathing. She was rushed to the hospital and died of lung embolism caused by the injection of fatty tissue.

Hasan is a dermatologist who has not been certified as a plastic surgeon. However, it’s legal for any doctor to perform plastic surgery in the state of Florida.

Cardona’s family will likely file a lawsuit against Vanity Cosmetic Center. In November, another patient at Vanity Cosmetic Center was rushed to the hospital and needed a blood transfusion after a butt augmentation surgery.

Reportedly, Hasan does not have malpractice insurance.
