Carstarphen was the first African American and the first woman to serve as Austin’s superintendent.
Carstarphen was successful in launching a number of nontraditional initiatives, including “early college start” programs at Reagan and LBJ high schools and dual language programs at elementary schools rather than bilingual programs.
Carstarphen is set to sign a three-year contract with a base salary of $375,000, with additional automobile monthly allowance of $1,200 and monthly allowance of $800 for expenses. Retirement contribution is 10 percent of her annual salary. She will receive health coverage (medical, dental, vision), disability and life insurance coverage. Her official start date is July 7, 2014.
Carstarphen serves on the boards of the Council of Great City Schools, Educational Testing Service, Austin Partners in Education, Austin Public Education Foundation, the Austin Symphony and Ballet Austin, and is on the Children’s Hospital/AISD Health Service Advisory Board. She is a student mentor through the Seedling Foundation.
