Songs like ‘Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It’ was political and influential. Do you think that films limit you from touching on subjects that music lets you address?
Oh yeah — well with a movie you are dealing with one subject matter and it takes the movie to put that one thing together,so whatever you are dealing with you are stuck with. But with a record you have 4 minutes so these ideas can come at a rapid pace, they can change from the first record to the last record so you can touch 12, 13 different subjects. So, you are able to be more flexible with records. Also, with movies, people tend to want to finance movies that work— not saying that you can’t make a political movie that works— but we have had so much success with comedies that is our lane right now. Its just what we can get made, get done; so we have our dream projects and our projects that are almost green lit. Sometimes they can be years away from each other, so you got to get it while the getting is good and strike when the iron is hot and hopefully those dream projects will come together in the future.
Do you think that comedies will always win because life is just so hard and people do not necessarily want to see all that drama on the screen?
Oh yeah; I believe that people would rather laugh than cry, and it is really simple. But those other movies have to be made because people are not as savvy as they should be on reading up on history and things that have happened in the past; so sometimes the only way you will get a glimpse or a hint is through a movie. You got to make all different types and that is what we do at Cube Vision. In my records, I have made enough people cry; so in my movies, I choose to make people laugh and have fun.
