In a pivotal scene from the TV miniseries “Roots” by Alex Haley, Maya Angelou  plays Yaisa, the grandmother of Kunta Kinte, played by Levar Burton.

In this scene, Kinte has returned from Mandinka warrior training and is now considered to be a man. As a Mandinka warrior, he claimed authority over the women of his village; except  his grandmother…
