The 2014 Texas Black Expo kicked off the weekend with the “Black Friday” all-black affair on Friday, June 20. The event was hosted by Biz Markie and Kid Capri at the House of Blues. On Saturday, June 21, Mary Benton of KPRC channel 2 news; and the Houston Chronicle‘s “Shop Girl,” Joy Sewing, hosted The Diva Dialogue open forum with celebrity speakers Mc Lyte, Sybil Wilkes and Reshonda Tate Billingsley. The celebrity guests answered questions from the audience on entrepreneurship, motherhood, and health and wellness.

Media mogul and comedian Nick Cannon showcased his new artists, Kreesha Turner and the Wonder Broz, alongside Radio Disney for 5- to 15-year-old expo attendees. Following the new-school showcase were performances by Mc Lyte, Morris Day and the Time and Regina Belle for the old-school R&B concert.

The Texas Black Expo is currently the largest African American empowerment festival to be held during the Juneteenth holiday. Founded in 2003, the expo is a nonprofit organization with a mission to stimulate growth through strengthening businesses, inspiring youth, and urban development.

“We are finalizing the theme for 2015 right now and will continue to push harder as we grow. The goal is to keep getting bigger and better,” said Texas Black Expo president Jerome Love.
