August Alsina is bringing R&B back to the forefront. The young New Orleans-raised vocalist proved his worth by scoring the top spot on the R&B/hip-hop charts and number two on the overall charts for his debut, Testimony.
Several months after appearing on the cover of our publication, Alsina hit the road to headline the Testimony Live tour. Thus far, the tour has sold out nationwide and will make its way to the Atlanta area Sept. 6.
While on the road, Alsina took a moment to discuss tour life, making new music, and being influenced by New Orleans.
How has it been headlining your first tour?
It’s great headlining my own tour. Right now that’s where all of my love, focus and passion is going. I’m putting everything that I have into the tour. But right after the tour, I’ll be working on new music and getting back into the studio.
When working on music, how much does New Orleans play a role in how you approach the music making process?
In New Orleans, we have our own culture. We just have our own world. It’s a good and bad thing sometimes. Good, because of the authenticity that it creates. Bad, because you know we have homebodies who don’t really know that there is a big world to see outside of New Orleans. But New Orleans made me. While living in New Orleans, you have to get out of the mud by any means necessary. I was able to do that and that’s what makes me a hustler and makes me who I am today.
Your final stop of the tour is in Atlanta Sept. 6. How has the city embraced you?
Atlanta is like a home away from home. So for me, it’s like going to another crib. Atlanta has a lot of love for me. I think every show I do there is always sold out because I don’t get to do many shows in the A. So when I’m actually able to touch the A, it’s a lot of people that come through and show an abundance of love.
