Dear White People hit theaters this weekend and the satire from director Justin Simian has been earning raves for its shrewd dissection of racial stereotypes and racial anxiety in the age of Obama. Despite its premise, the movie is a much more broader dissection of identity and stereotypes than one may assume; it doesn’t just skewer the way white people view black people — it tackles the way black people view each other and the way individuals can struggle to meet the expectations put forth by others.
It has been suggested by some, however, that the film’s subject matter and even the title could turn off white moviegoers; essentially, the people who most need to see the film are the least likely to watch it.
