The “Girls” creator has been hailed as a powerful voice for contemporary feminism, but Dunham has also come under fire for her show’s homogenous portrayal of New York City and she caused controversy by posting pics of herself in a burka-esque headwrap, appearing to mock Muslims. Dunham has defended her approach to “Girls,” where in the first season, the non-white characters were limited to nameless minor characters referred to on the cast list as simply “Hotel Bellhop” or “Jamaican Nanny.”
