According to ABC News, a California mother was gunned down while bringing her two children home from school. Chyemil Pierce, 30, her 7-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter were walking toward their Oakland home when gunfire erupted. As reported by witnesses, a fight between two groups of women escalated, causing male subjects to become involved. Shortly thereafter, gunfire was exchanged between the groups.

Pierce, who was walking behind her kids, screamed for them to run to safety before the mother of three got caught in the crossfire. “She was just trying to get them to their house safely,” Oakland police Sgt. Michael Cardoza said of Pierce.

Pierce, who also has a 1-year-old child, died at the scene. Her other children were not injured.

“She was my baby sister,” Aushaunti Pierce, Chyemil’s sister, told the Oakland Tribune. ”An exceptional mother who’d do anything for her children. So loved.”

According to CBS, Anthony Sims, 19, was arrested on Thursday and charged with shooting Pierce, in addition to multiple firearm counts relating to Monday’s shooting. Sims was also injured during the gun battle along with one other person. Sims sought treatment for his gunshot wounds at the hospital, which led to his arrest..
