2015 marks the 75th anniversary of Chicago’s South Side Community Art Center. The institution, which is committed to preserving, conserving and promoting the legacy and future of African-American art and artists while educating the community on the value of art and culture, has a series of upcoming exhibits and activities meant to celebrate its importance to the overall community.

Recently, as part of that celebration, actor Isaiah Washington (known for his roles in Love Jones and “Grey’s Anatomy,” to name a few) joined SSCAC’s board and friends for an intimate conversation about art, culture, life lessons, and the importance of Black folks being connected to a people and a place versus a color (ie. Black). The audience, made up of artists, community advocates, media professionals and entrepreneurs, participated in a playful back and forth with their special guest, as he shared how he lost his passion for acting after his “Grey’s Anatomy” debacle but found his new purpose in producing.

Kenyan born director Peres Owino, of the documentary film “Bound: Africans vs. African American” was on hand for the conversation as well. Check out the gallery to see more of the people’s in the place.
