Fans in the New York City were treated to a special taping of the new Spike TV hit “Lip Sync Battle” in Central Park earlier this week as part of SummerStage. Native New Yorker, actor and hip-hop icon LL Cool J along with New York resident Chrissy Teigen drew thousands of fans to see the hit television show that debuted in April.
“It feels so good to be back home,” LL Cool J said to welcome the audience after fellow hip-hop pioneer Doug E. Fresh warmed up the crowd.
Competing in the battle itself were two previous participants, Julianne Hough facing off with against her brother, Derek Hough. The siblings each performed two songs, but in between the competition, the crowd was treated to a few surprises.
Hoda Kotb came out on stage rocking the LSB championship belt, and audience members were given a sneak preview of a future episode between Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer of the Comedy Central show “Broad City.”
In perhaps the highlight of the show, LL invited Doug E. Fresh onto the stage, and the two legends performed “La Di Da Di” with Cool J performing Slick Rick’s verses and Fresh doing the human beat box. Not long after, fans started asking L to perform one of his hits, and he obliged, performing “Around the Way Girl.”
The New York audience left wanting more of the hit show, but we will all have to wait until the next episode, which airs tonight featuring NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders battling heartthrob Justin Bieber. Later in the season we will see hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea compete against her boyfriend, Los Angeles Lakers star Nick Young. Also, there will be an epic “Empire” battle between co-stars Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard. Tune in tonight and Thursdays at 10 p.m. on Spike.
