Fans will finally getting a long awaited new album by Dr. Dre, but it won’t be the album they were expecting.
During a radio interview in promotion of the upcoming N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton, the legendary artist and producer dropped the bombshell that he has officially scrapped plans for his heavily anticipated album, Detox, and instead will release a new project that he felt inspired to make after finishing the film.
The album, simply titled Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre, is set to feature a number of artists Dre has worked with over the years including Ice Cube, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Marsha Ambrosius, and Kendrick Lamar, as well as newcomers King Mez and Candice Pillay.
Dre insists this album will be the “grand finale” of his career as a recording artist and recently told Complex that though he put in a lot of work on Detox, the album just wasn’t up to his standards. ” I worked my a** off on it,” Dre said of the album sixteen years in the making, “but I don’t think I did a good enough job.”
Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre will be released August 7.
