A young mother in Houston is facing backlash after reportedly abandoning her two boys at the request of her baby’s daddy. According to reports by KPRC-TV, Jasmine Jones, 22, dropped off her sons, 9 months and 3 years old, at a fire station in Houston.

Initially, the firefighters said Jones was heard arguing with a man near the fire station before she dropped the boys off. She told them that the father of one of the boys, John Lee Smith, didn’t want to take care of the kids anymore.

Texas’ “Baby Moses” law allows parents who are unable to care for their kids to surrender them at a fire station, medical station, or hospital with impunity of the children or 60 days old or younger. Jones’ kids were too old to be categorized under the law.

However, once the story made national headlines, Jones came forward and claimed she was only dropping the boys off at the fire station because one suffered from asthma.

The children are now in the custody of the state. There was a court hearing regarding the case on Sept. 8, but Jones and Smith failed to attend. The two are being investigated by case workers for drug abuse and domestic violence.
