A twisted new thriller with a diverse cast is premiering in Atlanta on Sept. 24 at the Landmark Theatres Midtown Art Cinema. Jimmy: Did You Get One? will have viewers on the edge of their seats as the chilling story of psychotic characters, kidnapping and mystery unfolds.
Written and directed by newcomer Jerry May and famed comedian Chris Tucker’s brother, Dexter Tucker, the film focuses on Jimmy, a man who was brainwashed by his murderous grandmother. For 20 years, Granny ordered him to bring her young and unsuspecting girls to torture. But when Jimmy presents her with a 9-year-old girl full of faith in God named Sara, her father’s determination to find her and bring her back home causes the unraveling of secrets and dysfunction surrounding Jimmy’s mysterious family.
As the brainchild of Jimmy, May says he birthed the idea for the film from real-life stories of the thousands of children who are kidnapped every year.
“I came up with the concept [from] a lot of true, untold stories,” he told rolling out. “I don’t think enough attention is being displayed toward children who go missing, so I thought I would come up with Jimmy to show how easily it could happen.”
He says his biggest influence for the movie was the classic 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho, but he also drew from some other terror flicks.
“We threw in a little bit of Saw, with the suspense of Jason, where you don’t know what’s going to happen — you can hear it coming, but you can’t see it yet. Something to get your goosebumps poppin’ a bit,” he explains.
The filmmaker is expanding his brand of films and currently working on several scripts, one of which is the sequel to Jimmy that will explain more of Granny’s abusive and cruel background.
But for now, the excitement and anticipation for the premiere is heating up, and moviegoers have high expectations. May plans to meet those expectations and make sure that viewers leave the theater having received a full and well-balanced experience.
“My concept of this movie is to make you laugh, smile, cry and entertain you all in the hour and 37 minutes in the movie, [but] there is also a scary, horrifying aspect to it,” May says. “It should put that thought in your mind that something like this could happen to you.”
