Usually the only time people are concerned about rats in NYC is when it’s regarding human Mafia informants. This time, though, the problem is real rats. And these rats are not just scurrying around grabbing a bit of bread and making people squeamish. No, these rats are traveling from the local pizza parlor and killing pigeons on the streets of the city. If you get in the way of some of these rats, you risk a rat “beat-down,” as many have reported being attacked by rats.
The city of New York has roughly eight million people and the official estimate of the rat population is two million. Some feel that two million is a gross underestimation with reports of rats overrunning city parks. One person identified as Nora Prentice stated, “It’s like the Burning Man of rats . . . They’re just sitting there in a lawn chair waiting for you. I don’t know what the city can do about this rat condominium. It’s really gross.”
Even City Comptroller Scott Stringer has had enough of the rat problem. Stringer stated, “It’s unsightly to see rats running through neighborhoods like they actually bought a co-op somewhere.” Known as the “Rat Czar,” Stringer has a staff of 50 and a budget of $3 million to combat the growing problem. A major issue is the abundance of discarded food and other edible garbage produced by the city, as it increases the rat population. Until the city finds a workable solution, New York will have these rats for a longtime.
