The video of a Black female student being viciously assaulted by former school resource officer Ben Fields outraged many throughout the country. Seeing the teen body-slammed and tossed across the room was disturbing to many. But no one was more traumatized than the victim of the attack. It was later revealed that the young girl, named Shakara, is in foster care.
A GoFundMe page titled Support Spring Valley Victim has been established by Rutherford Law Firm LLC located in Columbia, South Carolina. The law firm now represents the girl. The message on the page gives the young girl the alias of Jane Doe and states:
“Jane Doe was the victim of police brutality. While seated in her desk, doing her math work, former Deputy Ben Fields forcibly removed her from the desk by choking her, flipping the desk over while she was still seated, and slinging her six feet across the classroom by her clothes. As a result, she suffers injuries to her ribs, back, neck, shoulder; a broken arm, and abrasions to her face. The funds raised will be put towards medical costs, educational expenses, and any other expenses she has to endure.”
The fundraising goal for the GoFundMe campaign was set at $25K. After 12 hours over $27,094 in donations had been raised for the young girl.
