On Saturday night, the cast and crew of the upcoming WGN thriller “Underground” gathered at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah for the Making of Underground panel at Blackhouse.

The executive producers, including R&B hitmaker John Legend, discussed the show with its stars, including Jurnee Smollett (“Friday Night Lights”), Jussie Smollett (“Empire”), and Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton).

The series follows a group of enslaved Blacks during America’s chattel slavery era in Georgia. The brave individuals put their lives on the line to break free from bondage.

“It’s a thriller,” Legend said, according to Yahoo! TV. “At any moment, these folks that are struggling to escape this oppressive system could lose their lives.”

Although the show is set in pre-Civil War times, it includes some modern elements. For example, the series will open with a slave being chased through the woods while Kanye West’s “Black Skinhead” plays.

“Underground” is set to premiere on Wednesday, March 9 at 10 p.m. on WGN America.
