Listening to Uneq’ka’s voice will sweep you away, both for the quality of it and how it will resonate with your spirit. Few singers in this world have that ability, but Chicago songstress Uneq’ka is one of them. She recently released her single, “Expansion,” on iTunes. We took some time to talk to her about her new single, artist responsibility and some of her challenges in the industry.
Tell us who you are.
My name is Uneq’ka, pronounced “u-NEE-ka.” I am a singer/songwriter, producer, community activist and filmmaker.
How would you describe your style of music?
My style of music would be considered soul, R&B, alternative, rock, jazz, funk, a bit of pop with an undertone of inspirational influences as a consistent theme across all genres.
Congratulations on the release of your newest single “Expansion.” What is the meaning behind this song?
This song is a collaboration, written/produced by me and Alexander Nettlebeck of Australia, along with other musicians. “Expansion” expresses the changes that are taking place in the world to help elevate our minds. This song serves as a bridge between two cultures and many genres of music. It is meant to lead you into your own personal expansion.
Talk about the importance of an artist’s voice when it comes to social issues.
In my opinion it is very important for an artist to speak out on social issues through song. We have a duty and responsibility. With an artist having a platform in which their voice will be heard by many, fans and followers, it is truly the artist’s responsibility, at the bare minimum it is important for an artist to shed some light on the issue and offer some solutions through music. My music is meant to inspire change and motivate action. Art of any form can help people to understand the issues and solution. I believe that artist who choose to address social issues are not granted the same opportunities as those who promote the cause of the social issues.
What has been the most challenging aspect of being an artist in these times?
With the downfall of the traditional music industry I have found it most challenging to create a path to success, getting it to the true masses and connecting with resources that will help push the music and brand forward. We are truly in the DIY [do it yourself] times in music which does allow you freedom to produce and distribute. Another major challenge I have is in creating a successful marketing campaign or connecting with major label support. I miss the days where P&D (promotions and distribution) deals were an option to independent artist. Music in these times require me to be passionate and consistent.
What inspires your music?
My music inspiration comes from life experiences and observations. Living in Chicago on all sides of town I have seen so much diversity, good and bad. My voice and music is the bridge to all of these different worlds with different social issues and experiences. In much of the world we sometimes have such a limited perspective of everything, I’d like to think my music sneaks in and shares these different perspectives so we can truly learn and help one another or at least plant the seed of understanding.
What is next for you? Do you have any new projects?
I will have another project coming out in the Fall with my team Chaotic Culture lead by Just Flo, I will release a few more singles with the Expansion Project.
Let us know if you have any shows coming up.
I will be performing with Mike Zabrin’s “Funktastic” and Chaotic Culture at the Metro on Feb 19th at 8pm
