Karrueche Tran has truly come into her own. Many recognize her for being the famous ex-girlfriend of pop sensation Chris Brown, but she has proved one movie at a time that she is far more than a celebrity’s arm candy. Tran has a real knack for acting and has continued to surprise both her fans and critics with the diverse roles she’s played from the Emmy-winning digital drama series “THE BAY” to StyleHaul Network’s fashion-based scripted series “Vanity.” Now, Tran is back at it again in her newest feature where she takes on the role of Courtney in the hilarious comedy A Weekend with the Family starring Marques Houston, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Suzanne Whang and Clifton Powell. The movies tells the story of Travis (Marques Houston) and his girlfriend Courtney (Tran) as they struggle to find a way to make their two families peacefully co-exist long enough for him to propose to the love of his life.

The movie makes it debut in theaters nationwide April 1.

Tell us about your role in the film.
I play Courtney and I’m dating Travis who is played by Marques Houston. I pretty much find out that he is going to propose to me so I freak out and I plan this weekend getaway for both of our families to meet. We have this huge culture clash between my very traditional, strict Korean-Black family and his southern-country family. We have this crazy weekend together and in the end, we find out although both families come from two totally different backgrounds we have more in common than we expected. It’s a romantic comedy so it’s hilarious.

Your character is much more lighthearted than your previous roles in “The Bay” and “Vanity.” How did you prepare for the role as Courtney?
This was my first comedy that I’ve done and I think what was easy for me was being on set with the other actors like Wendy Raquel Robinson and Clifton Powell. They are veterans in the game and they have been doing this forever. Both of them are just naturally so funny. Even with Marcus we have a really fun relationship. We just goof around, ya know? I think I was able to vibe off of everyone else’s energy.

Your off-screen relationship with Marques gives off a sibling vibe. What was it like playing his love interest?
We definitely play with each other all the time and that made it fun too. It made it easier for our connection as two actors and, of course, it would have been a little different if we were dating. Again, the movie was so funny and more lighthearted that it made it easier for us to have that connection on-screen.

Are there any aspects of your character that you personally identify with?
Yea. I definitely identify with Courtney as being biracial. I’ve never had a very strict mother. My mom wasn’t very strict or traditional in that way. I would say being biracial and growing up mixed, I can relate to Courtney with that. Courtney is also very nosy, which I am also very nosy. She found the wedding ring, which is something I would one hundred percent do. I do relate to her in certain ways.

Let’s discuss your upcoming projects. You recently did a collaboration with ColourPop Cosmetics for the matte lipstick line, Kaepop. Has this business venture sparked an interest to create a beauty line of your own?

As of right now I have so many things going own that I don’t really know, but ColourPop has been one of my best businesses that I’ve done. I would definitely keep into consideration branching off and do my own thing. For now, stick with ColourPop, but maybe, I love beauty. What girl doesn’t love makeup? There is a huge market out there for that. Luckily, I have been able to tap into it with my collaboration so hopefully somewhere down the line something even bigger. I have a collaboration coming up soon that is fashion-based. It will be coming out within the next few weeks actually. It is something I am very excited about and something very cool for the festival season, but that is all I can say. Make sure to keep a look out if you are following me on the gram and you will see some stuff soon.

What fashion looks are you into for spring?
Once spring hits I’m ready to go from the dark colors to the bright. Last night we had our premiere for the movie and I wore this mustard-yellow dress and the shopping that I have been doing lately has been in the nudes, cremes, whites, blush tones, so I’m definitely leaning toward more color as I have on all-black right now.  I am ready to spring forward and get some color and vibrant tones going.

Where are you shopping for your spring season outfits?
I like to shop for day-to-day clothes at Topshop especially because they have a petite section which is perfect for me because sometimes it’s hard for me to find clothes that fit well for my body shape. Other than that Topshop shop is one of my favorites, Zara and there is a store out here called Opening Ceremony. For my shoes, I am a designer whore. I love, love, love my shoes. My shoes can come from Saks, Barneys or any store, but I love my shoes.

What songs are on your spring music playlist?
Right now, I’ve been listening to a group. They are two guys called Majid Jordan. I’ve just been kind of listening to their album lately. It’s very upbeat yet very chill. It’s something you can kind of vibe too. I would definitely suggest you look into them. It’s very awesome.
