On Friday, May 27, The Collective kicked off the 39th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival at Piedmont Park. Headlining the event was funk artist and cult favorite Joi, who has a new album on its way titled Rebekkah HolyLove’s Salvation Symphony.

“We are excited about the lineup for this year’s Atlanta Jazz Festival,” says Camille Russell Love, executive director of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, in a statement to press. “As our city becomes more international and our population younger, we have booked the festival to welcome these new audiences. From the soulful groove of Gregory Porter, the hip-hop inspired brass of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, the funk-soul-jazz of songstress JOI, and the sensuous stylings of Brazilian artist Eliane Elias, we’ve got a wide variety of jazz flavors on three stages. And admission is free! Make plans now to join us for the 39th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival in Piedmont Park over Memorial Day Weekend, May 27 to 29.”

Joi was joined onstage by Lil John Roberts (drums), Mary Harris (percussion/vocals), Mark Jefferson (bass), Rod Harris Jr. (guitar), and David “Whild” Brown (keys) and Dungeon Family’s Sleepy Brown. She is also producing a documentary, 20 Years of Joi and Counting, that focuses on her 20-year anniversary show in Atlanta in 2014.
