President Barack Obama took a subtle shot at Donald Trump for his feud with the parents of a Muslim-American soldier killed in Iraq. During his recent trip to Atlanta, President Obama spoke at the National Convention of Disabled American Veterans and shared how Americans should honor Gold Star families.
“And let me say this. No one — no one — has given more for our freedom and our security than our Gold Star families,” President Obama said. “Michelle and I have spent countless hours with them. We have grieved with them.”
President Obama never mentioned Trump by name, but it was a response to Trump’s ongoing feud with Khizr and Ghazala Khan. The Khans lost their son, Humayun, during a car bomb attack in Iraq in 2004. The Muslim-American family shared their story during the Democratic National Convention. Trump soon waged a ridiculous war-of-words against the Khans. It was another example of how Trump’s irrational behavior could possibly destroy the country if he’s elected president.
During his speech in Atlanta, President Obama also spoke about how veterans should have better access to health care when they return home from duty.
“When you came home, you deserved better,” President Obama said. “Veterans who at times have struggled to get care at the VA, you deserve better, too. If there’s ever a breach in the covenant, then leaders in this country have to work hard to regain trust…Let’s face it, sometimes folks don’t know that, but it’s a fact. And I have to say, thanks to the Affordable Care Act — Obamacare — veterans not covered by the VA now have access to quality, affordable health care. And insurance companies can’t discriminate against you because of preexisting conditions like post-traumatic stress. And more veterans are gaining access to health insurance.”
President Obama also attended a fundraiser to benefit Hillary Clinton’s campaign while in Atlanta.
