How would you introduce the reinvented Lisa McClendon to others?
I would introduce the reinvention of Lisa McClendon as a rebirthing of the era of Ella Fitzgerald, the area when music had its own language and a timeless sound.
How many albums did you have in the gospel arena throughout the years?
I have a total of six albums that have been released in the gospel genre.
What were some of your fans’ favorite gospel songs?
I would have to say the most popular song for me in gospel would have to be “You Are Holy.” I think every church in America has sang or is singing that song still in their services.
Why did you take a break from music?
I never really took a break from music; I slowed down. I slowed down because I had just remarried and was settling in to the new life. Then I became a master herbalist student, which I still am today and I look forward to completing my studies.
What are some challenges you’ve experienced getting back into music?
I think the biggest challenge is me. I am challenged daily with the fear of losing my supporters because I have expanded my music into the jazz. I am convinced to do what’s in my heart, so far the fans have been wonderful and they are excited about the new album to come.
Why did you expand into making jazz music?
Well, in my heart and sound, I’ve always been jazz. I was just fortunate enough to be discovered while singing in church. So while that was a dream come true for me, I was always hesitant signing to a gospel label because I knew I was so much more than that. Now I can be all of who I am.
Who are some of the artists that stand out to you in the jazz genre?
First and foremost Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Pearl Bailey. I’m also a big fan of the late Natalie Cole and Betty Carter. These days, I am enjoying the sound of Somi and Cecile McLorin Salvant.
Are you currently working on more music?
I am. We just released a promotional video to my upcoming single, “I’ll Fall In Love again.” We are preparing to go into the studio this fall to begin recording the new album.
When can people expect to hear some of your new music?
New music is already circulating on YouTube and as early as this fall you’ll be beginning to hear more of what’s to come.
What do you want to say to your gospel fans concerning your expansion into jazz?
That I am still Lisa. Gospel will always be a part of my roots and sound. Lastly, I am excited to have their continued support in this expansion.
What does Lisa like to do when she’s not doing music?
When I’m not doing music, I am gardening. I am currently assisting in the management of a local community garden. I absolutely love it. It’s home for me. I also teach children how to garden and eat healthy.
Do you feel your recent Periscope video about you and your husband’s marital challenges might affect your fan base?
It shouldn’t. People have marital challenges all the time. While they may not expose them on social media, I did find, surprisingly, that many women and men needed to see my pain to be encouraged to deal with their own.
What are some final thoughts that you want to share with those who were inspired by you throughout the years?
Never be afraid of change. Everyday we are evolving into something bigger and better. Don’t rob yourself of the opportunity to expand.
