A college professor at the University of Virginia believes that Black Lives Matter is the new KKK. The incident occurred after members of Black Lives Matter created an event in Charlottesville, Virginia. The event featured Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza as the keynote speaker.

Professor Douglas Muir commented on the event by writing on Facebook, “Black Lives Matter is the biggest racist organization since the Klan. Are you kidding me. Disgusting.”

Muir’s statement proved his ignorance when it comes to Black Lives Matter and this failure to take into account the violent history of the KKK. Black Lives Matter uses nonviolent tactics to get their message across regading police brutality and the killing of unarmed Black men. On the other hand, the KKK has a history of using terroristic tactics against Blacks and other mintortes. For decades, Blacks faced lynchings and intimidation from members of the KKK. It’s appalling that the terrorsit group is still allowed to demonstrate on American soil considering its violent past.

But Muir’s lack of knowledge and racist ideas reveals that he doesn’t have the wherewithal to be a college professor. If he doesn’t understand the major differences between Black Lives Matter and KKK, he doesn’t deserve to teach the next generation of leaders.

The Vice Mayor of Charlottesville, Wes Bellamy, responded to the post by posting on Instagram, “The notion that #BlackLivesMatter can be comparable to the Klu Klux Klan is not only incredibly misguided, but goes to show the lack of cultural awareness that still plagues many professors at our Universities across the country.”

The University of Virginia has since denounced Muir’s statement by calling it “entirely inappropriate.” He has taken a leave of absence, but has yet to be suspended or dismissed for his statement.
