Federal law enforcement had become involved in the mysterious disappearance of Congressman John Conyers’ son. Authorities and friends stated that Carl Conyers, a 21-year-old junior at the University of Houston, had been missing for more than 24 hours. Before his disappearance, his roommate stated that Conyers was acting erratically and sent strange messages to friends and family. In addition, he shaved his facial hair and was walking around his apartment with a shirt pulled over his face. There was a plate of uneaten food, two empty beer bottles along with pictures of his girlfriend on his desk. His roommate stated that the normally neat Conyers left his room a mess and took very few items with him before he disappeared.
According to his roommate, Conyers was supposed to meet up with his girlfriend and a few friends on Tuesday evening but never showed. A search of his apartment revealed that he had taken his debit card and ID with him before he left the apartment and left his car. In addition, it was discovered that he had a backpack stuffed with clothing in his room that was not taken. Conyers is described as a very outgoing student and his disappearance and his behavior has his friends and family greatly concerned.
His mother Monica Conyers flew from Michigan to Houston out of concern for her missing son and to help with the search. She stated to media, “This is not like him. If he was going to go somewhere and take a break, which he’s never ever done, he would call me. I’ve heard nothing from my son. Nothing Period.”
Because he is the son of a sitting member of Congress, the FBI and Secret Service became involved. His father, John Conyers, represents the 13th Congressional District of Michigan and is the longest serving member of Congress having been elected in 1965. Congressman Conyers issued a statement asking for privacy.
