Are you ready for a good ole blast from the past?
Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff are officially reuniting, and it’s all going down very soon. In case you missed it, the dynamic duo took to social media this week, where they announced they’ll be taking the stage together, again, not once, but twice this “summer, summer, summertime.”
The two announced the exciting news with a brief video clip featuring throwback footage from their “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” days. “First two shows are locked!! Y’all ready?” Smith, who goes by the rap name “The Fresh Prince,” captioned the post, while Jazzy wrote, “Yup..and THIS IS FINALLY HAPPENING!!! #JJFPReturn #vinyldestination.”
As fans may already know, this is the pair’s first official shows in 12 years. In 1989, the group received a GRAMMY Award for Best Rap Performance for their hit “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” In 1992, they picked up a second GRAMMY for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for their most popular song, “Summertime,” off their fourth studio album, Homebase. The duo last released music together in 1998, after which Smith focused on pursuing a solo music and acting career. Still, the pair continued to reunite for small impromptu performances including their most recent, alongside Smith’s daughter Willow Smith, at the 2016 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia.
Then, in 2015 Smith revealed he had recorded new music with Jeff as well as plans for a European tour. “We’ve recorded about 25 songs and have four or five I actually like,” Smith announced during an appearance on BBC’s ‘The Graham Norton Show’ in the U.K.
Meanwhile, sets are scheduled for the two-day 2017 MTV Presents Summerblast Festival in Croatia on August 25 and 26 and at the 2017 Livewire Festival in the U.K. on Aug. 27.
