In 2018, we’re in a hurricane of the old school versus new school mentality of rap. There is a catchy news headline for every current millennial rapper about how they’ve put their youthful opinion in the cross-hairs of legends. Just last week, Los Angeles rapper Lil Xan called Tupac “boring,” which set the hip-hop community ablaze. Luckily, there are pockets of light in the darkness that overshadow the rap world and its undying love for its legends. Lil Yachty is one of those pockets of light for the moment.

Lil Yachty has come under scrutiny for ushering in the age of mumble rap, but he put his skills to the test at Hot 97 this morning. Yachty showed courage as his appearance on the legendary segment follows up the likes of Royce Da 5’9, Nipsey Hussle, and Black Thought. A Funkmaster Flex freestyle is never an easy task to complete, but Lil Boat appeared mostly confident in the 4 minute, 42-second video. The Teenage Emotions artist has released his second album Lil Boat 2 on the indie-label Quality Control Music.
