As a Black woman, what is your superpower?
As a Black woman, I consider my superpower fortitude. Only through true resilience and courage have I been able to persevere, despite my circumstances.
Why is it important for women of color to work in positions of leadership?
It is of great [importance] that Black women stand up as leaders because we have historically been underrepresented. The only way to eliminate the disparities for Black women is to be at the table when decisions are made that not only impact us personally, but [also] our counterparts.
If you could thank a Black history maker for her contributions to the world, who would you choose?
I would thank Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black woman to become a professionally trained nurse and thrive [in] a predominantly White society. Without Mary Mahoney, I might not be where I am today. My encounters with racism within health care could never measure up to what she endured.
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest achievement is just stepping out [of] the box and giving my children the ability to see the world in a different light. I pray that they will be able to find no giant too big to be chopped down at the ankles.
