Another tragedy has struck an American family as a Louisiana woman returning from her honeymoon in the Dominican Republic has become the 10th tourist to die since 2018.
Susan Simoneaux and her newlywed husband, Keith Williams, had just gotten back from their stay at a resort in Punta Canta to their hometown of Luling, Louisiana, about 30 minutes west of New Orleans.
Less than a week after returning, Simoneaux was rushed to the hospital with fluid in her lungs. She died a few days later, according to WWLTV.
She is now the 10th reported death after staying in one of the resorts of the D.R. since 2018.
“I would have never went [sic] if I would have known,” Williams told reporters outside his home. “I did not know to be honest with you.”
The U.S. Department of State claims they have not seen a rise in tourist deaths in 2019. And the Dominican Republic reported once again they do not see a connection between the victims who have died this year and 2018. But the American public is definitely alarmed.
“We are closely monitoring ongoing investigations by Dominican authorities into several recent deaths of U.S. citizens in the Dominican Republic,” a State Department spokesperson said in a statement obtained by the New York Daily News.
Meanwhile, the FBI is conducting toxicology tests at their labs in suburban Washington. It will be a few more weeks before the agency gets the results back.
