Texas legislator Toni Rose shares details of her proudest achievement

Why is it important for women of color to work in leadership roles and decision-making capacities?

Women of color, specifically Black women, are the most educated group in America as well as the backbone of this country. Black women make things happen, yet we are continuously in a supportive role and not at the table. It is important to have women of color in leadership roles and at the table because we are the ones at the ground level to ensure the decisions are implemented and are affected greatly by the decisions.

Why is it important for experienced Black women to reach back and help younger women of color?

It is our duty as Black women leaders to ensure that we groom and mentor the next generation of Black women so that we will always have representation at the table.

What encouraging piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Life is filled with things worth fighting for. Stay committed to your passion. That which we are most passionate about is what we believe to be worthwhile.

As a successful woman, what is your proudest achievement?

My proudest moment is when I was elected state representative. The pride in my parents’ faces made all of the hard work and sacrifices worth it. When I was 9 years old, my late father, Judge Charles Rose, ran for this very position unsuccessfully. Neither one of us knew it at the time that he was laying the foundation for me to one day fill this seat to make Texas a better place.
