Shaking up the diversity pipeline with Handshake director Jordan Pedraza

How can companies leverage apprenticeships and alternative education to tap improve diversity in tech?

Apprenticeships are really cool and powerful. At Handshake, we are starting explore that on our engineering side and in support. We have an embedded apprenticeship program where we hire people part-time, see how things go and then make a decision on full-time employment. We are also expanding to community colleges. Employers are really excited about tapping into that talent as well. I am looking forward to growing more partnerships with alternative institutions like boot camps and online schools like Southern New Hampshire University. Our mission is all about equity and expanding access and helping employers uncover talent that they previously ignored. Traditional colleges will always be a part of our network but expanding opportunities to students in alternative programs is very important to us.
