En Vogue discusses its influence on music culture and upcoming ‘Empire’ cameo

“Oh, my God, it was so exciting. It was like old times,” Ellis recalled with a nostalgic grin. “We didn’t miss a beat. It felt like the first time we started singing together.”

Herron-Braggs echoed Ellis’ sentiments. “It felt like sisters and family back together,” she said.

En Vogue will appear as themselves on the March 17 episode of “Empire,” which will also be the directorial debut of Taraji P. Henson. Henson’s portrayal of the shrewd and endearing Cookie Lyon mimics the real-life Rhone. “We’ve been fans of ‘Empire’ from its inception,” Ellis said. “Being on set with Taraji brought back memories of how far we’ve come.”

The “Runaway Love” singers remain relevant in an era where Braggs-Heron acknowledged “acts are no longer getting signed to record labels like they used to.” Yet, regardless of trends that favor solo artists, anthems like “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” and “Whatta Man,” stay streaming and on playlists.

After their appearance on “Empire,” En Vogue is reissuing their first album, Born to Sing, as a 30th-anniversary expanded edition. The digital-only exclusive on Rhino Records will feature nine new remixes celebrating the original release date of April 3, 1990.
