Licensed counselor Latricia Pitts is committed to mental health and healing

What have you learned about yourself in doing this type of work? How has it changed you?

I definitely learned that I took my HBCU Winston-Salem State University’s school motto,  “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve,” very seriously. I have definitely been serving. I think the biggest and most important thing that I’ve learned being in this field is confirmation that I am in the right field. This is a field that requires heart, passion, strength, dedication and competence. If you come into the field for the wrong reasons or [with the wrong] intent, you won’t last long-term. If you come into the field for the right reasons and [with] good intentions, I believe you will continue to evolve into the best version of yourself professionally and personally.

I consistently practice self-awareness in how I can be a better therapist, mom and person. I can honestly say, even on my worst day, I still want to be in this field. I am continuously reminded that someone in this world needs what I have to give and that my work is my ministry. I think doing this work has continued to provide me with clarity. It also encourages me to practice what I am teaching, be courageous, advocate and assist those in need, and never stop growing.

What is one thing you would like everyone to know about therapy?

There isn’t any shame in going to therapy. Every person has mental health, [but] not every person has a mental health diagnosis. If what you’re doing isn’t working, then try something different.
