5 Black hairstylists describe how COVID-19 is impacting their businesses

Angela C. Styles, a Los Angeles celebrity hairstylist who owns a private studio, decided to shut her salon down before the governor issued a statewide quarantine.

“I don’t mind a few weeks home to do a hard reset, especially if it means preventing the spread of this thing. Thankfully our rent has been waived until the city reopens businesses,” Styles said.

New York natural hair specialist Candace Witherspoon described the harsh impact the pandemic is having on the industry.

“I’ve spoken to many of my industry friends, and our books have reduced drastically,” she said. “[As of] March 20, 2020, I will remain closed until further notice. This is such a scary time, but we have to remain hopeful and come together as one.”
