J. Wyndal Gordon discusses fatherhood lessons and the importance of integrity

What advice would you give about being responsible for your own dreams?

The dreams are for free, but the hustle is sold separately, and some assembly is required. I never think of my son as owing me anything but if forced to, I would say the only thing he “owes” me is to live out “his” dreams. We all have a purpose.

When it comes to protecting yourself at all times physically and mentally, what would you tell your children?

I say this all the time: “It’s not their job to like you, it’s yours.” Do not let anyone put their hands on you. Learn how to defend yourself physically or verbally. The “N-word” is still a fighting word. You have my permission.

Which fatherhood experiences have taught you the most about yourself?

My son fell ill last month and had to be admitted into the hospital. He is 5 years old, and I felt scared and powerless. I had to rely on my faith and trust in God to steady me. Today, the phrase “He is a healer” has profound meaning. I’m a witness.
