While leaders at Hampton University did not disclose the amount their school was given, they shared a message of gratitude.
“This pure act of benevolence is clearly a game-changer, and it could not have come at a better time,” said Hampton University President William R. Harvey. “I speak for the entire Hampton University community when I say we are grateful to Ms. MacKenzie Scott, who has chosen to support us during this unprecedented period of uncertainty.”
Leaders at Xavier University of Louisiana, which received $20 million, announced the news on social media. The donation is the largest the school has received in its 95-year existence.
“This gift will enhance the university’s capacity to educate in the medical sciences, pharmacy, law, the arts, and the social sciences,” they wrote.

Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick publically thanked Scott — a former pupil of one of the institution’s most famous alumnae, Toni Morrison — for her $40 million donation and shared his plans for how the school would use the funds.
“I would like to thank Ms. MacKenzie Scott for her investment into Howard University and our 153-year mission of serving a diverse community of dynamic scholars who come here for an education and leave here with a purpose to serve the world,” Frederick said in a statement.
The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Obama Foundation, the George W. Bush Presidential Center, RAINN, and the European Climate Foundation were among other organizations that received donations.
