“When we met with Marsai about this project, we couldn’t have been more impressed with her passion for diverse storytelling and commitment to female empowerment,” said Rafael Garcia, vice president, development, Disney Branded Television to Deadline. “We’re extremely excited to team up with … the Genius Entertainment team to tap into the roller-skating culture in a way that’s truly both authentic and aspirational for our audience.”
Martin previously starred in and executive produced the 2019 film Little which also featured Regina Hall and Issa Rae. Twitter has been in awe about her announcement as well.
“LOOK AT THAT CASTING!!! It’s so refreshing to see Black girls who are monoracial and dark-skinned as the lead actresses. I love this so much omg. Congrats, Marsai!!! Can’t wait to watch this!!” tweeted @SadeGabriella.
“Sickle cell, oh wow. This is gonna be such a beautiful way to teach young children about something that’s really affected the Black community for so long and still goes very much unrecognized. Thank you!” added @RheaMorris on Twitter.
The series will also feature hip-hop veteran Yolanda “Yo-Yo” Whitaker as roller rink owner Duchess.
