Having worked with some of the top talent in hip-hop, DJ T-Jizzle sat down with rolling out to talk about his career as a national touring DJ and how he got his start.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started deejaying?
This is my 16th year. I started off when I was 12. I’m from Buffalo, New York, and I’ve been touring for the last six years. I got started literally by talking to my dad one day about it, and he sent some equipment to the house and started working on it.
Are you self-taught or did somebody show you how?
We reached out to DJ Shay, Shay brought us in the studio, and I learned how to deejay from him. DJ Shay really taught me how to like scratch and blend early, and that was like my foundation of deejaying— learning from somebody else from the older generation that was in DJ battles. I was watching his old tapes and that really, really helped me.
Where were you deejaying at the beginning of your career?
I started literally just downstairs in the front room of the house. We did community centers my first year, and then in my second year is when I got in the club. Like six months later. It was my first time doing a concert with the Soulja Boy tour.
What other artists have you worked with?
NAV [rapper from Toronto], Future, The Weeknd, Drake. [I’m] missing a few, but I’ve done actual tours with those artists.
