Writer and director Angel Kristi Williams’ directorial debut “Really Love,” produced by MACRO, was selected to play in narrative competition at SXSW and won the Special Jury Recognition for Acting for co-stars Kofi Siriboe and Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing. The film then played as part of AFI Fest’s Special Presentations to much acclaim. It began streaming on Netflix on Aug. 25. Williams is a Film Independent Project Involve Directing Fellow and was the recipient of the Sony Pictures Diversity Fellowship.
The Baltimore native details the collaboration that helped to create the Netflix featured film.
When did your love for writing and directing begin?
My father brought home a VHS camera when I was really young, around 8 years old. I taught myself how to use it and my journey as a storyteller began with me making home videos of my family and friends. I really gained an interest of creating images of us studying photography and wrote my first screenplay in college and that’s when I kind of got the directing books. I was like, wow, not only can I, create the composition of this image, but I can also be the agent of the story. Subsequently, I’ve really wanted to create more stories about people who look like me.
