‘Sisters in Arms’: The untold story of daring Black women in WW II

For fans of historical fiction, this novel provides the perspective of Black women whose historical experiences have been overshadowed. Stories similar to these are often neglected from a school’s curriculum and it’s likely this novel will be a lot of people’s first time hearing about the all-Black women’s army. This novel strongly details the discrimination, hardships and perseverance of Black women during the 1940s.

Although Grace and Eliza are putting their lives on the line, they witness firsthand, that being in a uniform doesn’t immediately guarantee them respect or support. They are still Black women before they are soldiers. While their parents tried to make them reconsider their decision for this reason, this was a lesson they will have to learn themselves.

The fierce duo takes many risks and provides an example of what it means to exceed others’ expectations. When White people doubt their ability and expect them to fail, it’s only in their power to prove them wrong. Grace and Eliza demonstrate clearly why they deserve to be there. This moving story captures the vivid experience of being a Black female U.S battalion to be deployed overseas. Sisters in Arms  showcases strong female protagonists and thoroughly researched material. Their story is not one to miss.
