G Herbo emphasizes the importance of destigmatizing therapy

G Herbo has been quite vocal about his struggles with gun-related PTSD and the toll it took on his mental health. The Chicago rapper used his diagnosis as inspiration for his third studio album, PTSD.

On Nov. 29, 2021, he stopped by “Peace of Mind” with Taraji P. Henson and co-host Tracie Jenkins to discuss how his experiences with gun violence led to a PTSD diagnosis and began the start of his therapy journey.


When Henson asked the rapper to highlight his first experience of gun violence, he revealed that he was a mere 9 years old when he witnessed his first murder.

“I was with my mom, and she was putting something in the car, and out of nowhere, the guy who was just standing on the corner walked up and just shot him. And he leaned over on the gate, and he shot him some more times,” he recalled. 


G Herbo went on to say that he was around 21 years old when he began to realize that all the gun violence surrounding him wasn’t normal or healthy. The rapper recounted instances where he witnessed his friends getting murdered, and he’d come right back outside the next day as if nothing transpired.

After Jenkins asked the rapper how many people he knew who lost their lives to gun violence, he replied, “probably 100 people,” but he can “name like 50 people” that he grew up with.
