The hip-hop legend didn’t let the event pass without going on his trademark tangents. Throughout the panel, Ye expressed his dislike for Tyler Perry, Oprah, the Metaverse and ex-wife Kim Kardashian-West going on “Saturday Night Live” to joke about their divorce and kissing her new boyfriend Pete Davidson on TV. He made jokes about his iconic moments with Sway Calloway and George W. Bush. He also invited Brown to the discussion as the event was going on and later interviewed Brown at the table about taking his jersey off and running off the sideline during a game.
Brown explained he didn’t want him running off the field to signify quitting as much as he wanted it to represent standing up for yourself and not letting people box you in. Brown was a few catches away from a $1 million performance bonus and told his coach he was hurt throughout the week. When the team told him he would get cut if he didn’t go back in the game, he left. Brown said he was financially able to leave thanks to his other ventures.
Ye called Brown’s move the new kneeling, referring to Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem as a social justice protest.
Near the end of the panel, Ye told the media members to applaud Lee for his effort to uplift Black voices. Lee said he created the event for all media members to receive their “roses.”
The event ended with Sunday Service’s first performance where outside video and media were allowed. The choir, directed by the electric Jason White, performed gospel remixes of “Through The Wire,” songs from Donda and Adele’s “Easy On Me.”
